Sam Fender has donated the full amount of his £25,000 Mercury Prize prize money to the trust for venues, which works to save the UK's independent music venues.

He was awarded the cheque on mid-October as his latest record the album was named the top album of the past year.

Fender has chosen to give the cash to the trust, in recognition of the vital role small stages fulfilled in his early career.

"I couldn't be pursuing this success if it hadn't been for all the performances I played around the area, and beyond, when I was starting out," remarked Fender. "These spaces are renowned, but they are struggling."

Since the start of 2023, more than 150 of these locations have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the total UK scene.

In the last year, well-known musicians such as the band Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all supported the MVT in its attempts to help venues survive, by including a minor surcharge to their ticket costs, which goes to help local stages.

Sam Fender also took part, raising more than £100,000 on his 2024 arena tour to support numerous grassroots venues across the UK.

The donation assisted spaces that were facing potential shutdown due to difficulties arising from water damage, fires and personal losses, as well as permit problems, conflicts and neighbor objections.

Some locations received financial assistance in upgrading facilities and sound and lighting systems that helped performers and fans.

"The idea that revenue from concerts in major spaces supports the smaller venues, where it kicks off for performers like me, is just logical," the star has said.

Fender is far from the only musician to give his award funds to good deeds.

Back when the band won the trophy in the year 1996 for their record the album, frontman the singer announced that the band would donate their winnings to the non-profit War Child.

In 2002, rapper and singer Ms Dynamite divided her bounty between several good causes, including the NSPCC and a charity for Sickle Cell.

"Additionally, I contributed a grand to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I did gymnastics when I was a child and they required updated gear," Ms Dynamite explained to a publication.

In recent years, they contributed their winnings to the community center that supported their act, alongside other grassroots music organisations.

Additionally the 1994 recipients they donated their prize to a multiple sclerosis charity after a acquaintance was identified with the condition.

"The victory was sufficient," stated vocalist Small. "The prize was the bonus but we could do without the cherry, because we had the honor. So our victory affected the lives of others."

In the past week, the MVT shared it had protected a couple of grassroots venues in the South East, by transferring them to community ownership.

One venue in Southampton and The Croft in Bristol were bought under the Own Our Venues initiative, which is funded by Arts Council England and supporters who purchase "shares" in the venues.
